Employee Spotlight – Jessica Anderson

Jessica has been with Interrail since the very beginning, when her father Jim Kelley started the company out of the dining room in their home. In her senior year of high school Jessica would come home and help her dad scan photos for surveys, assemble job folders and file paperwork. As Interrail grew Jessica helped in various departments where growth was needed, always under the guidance and watchful eye of her dad. From administration and accounting to distribution and plan management, Jessica did it all. For years she was the “runner” as we call it, carrying jobs to and from CSX while also managing our project report and distribution department. For the last several years Jessica has been in our accounting department managing payroll among other duties. She is also our Corporate Secretary and a key person in planning for Interrail’s future as a company.

We are so excited about Jessica’s spotlight so everyone can get to know her a little better! Her nickname is Cupcake which may perfectly describe her sweet disposition and petite frame but anyone that knows her well can attest to her spunky, fun attitude, humor and quick wit that makes her more like… a habanero cupcake topped with funfetti!

Jessica opted for questions for her spotlight. We’ve enjoyed reading her answers and learning more about her, we hope you do too.

1. Who would play you in the movie adaptation of your life?
-People have told me that I look like Tina Fey sometimes but have the personality of Anna Kendrick. I like both of them so either one would be fine with me.

2. What’s the coolest experience you’ve ever had?
-So far – I’d have to say hiking to the top of a volcano in Costa Rica with some of my closest family and friends. So many people don’t get to have experiences like that so I felt very fortunate. It was amazing!

3. If you could splurge on one must-have item, what would it be?
-Without a doubt, it would be a piece of the most ridiculously gorgeous Emerald and/or Sapphire (or both) and Diamond jewelry I could find.

4. What is your favorite book?
-I am a huge reader! I love everything about books! I think to say “this one book is my favorite” really depends on the mood that I’m in at the time. Eventually I’ll come across another book and think “Now THIS is my favorite!”. I usually read Mystery type books and it’s even better if it’s non-fiction or memoirs on interesting people. I like fiction too but I’d rather it hold a plausible story line not some crazy “this would never happen” story line. Needless to say Science Fiction isn’t high up on my “go to” books list.

5. Your dream home would be in the mountains, by the ocean or in the woods?
-How about all of the above – a house on a cliff close the woods overlooking the ocean.

6. If you could go back to any era which would it be?
-Late 1800’s or early 1900’s Victorian Era but only if I were nobility or gentry. I like the idea of wearing outrageous dresses and jewels and having everything done for me. I would just be social, donate money and throw grand balls.

7. What was the last thing you heard or saw that made you laugh out loud?
-Heck if I know – I have the funniest family and co-workers so I’m always laughing about something.

8. What is your favorite guilty pleasure when it comes to sweets?
-Cadbury Caramello’s or Cadbury Mini Eggs. More so those darn eggs! I will buy bags of them and hide them from my kids just so I don’t have to share. I thank everything good in this world that Easter comes only once a year because those couple of months are trying times for me.

9. Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
-My family, in general, are the most influential people in my life. I could go into details about each one but it’s one of those things that would depend on the situation I’m facing. I think about who would handle it best and ask myself what they would do.

10. What do you like to do in your free time?
-I play on a women’s flag football team – Grid Iron Girls – through the winter. Watch my kids play lacrosse, do gymnastics, go to concerts, work out, go to Jaguar games and cook out with friends and family.

11. How long have you and Steven been married?
-This October will be 15 years that we’ve been married however we’ve been together for close to 19 years total. There are a lot of things I could say about our marriage but to sum it all up – it’s perfect for us. Like a lazy Sunday afternoon and a 3 ring circus all mixed together.

12. What do you love most about being a mom?
-What’s not to love? I helped create those little sacks of sugar and spice! It’s challenging and rewarding all at the same time but I guess what I love most would be getting to know them year after year. Each year they are different – ever changing – and I think it’s fun to see the evolution.

13. Favorite sports team(s)?
-Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Volunteers Football

14. If you could be on any TV show what would it be?
-The only time I watch TV, which is few and far between, it’s usually Dateline ID or something like that. I’d be on there, not because I killed someone, have been killed or disappeared (I hope) but because I was the one who tracked down the killer.

15. What is your worst fear?
-The same as anyone else I guess. Loosing loved ones, drowning, being set on fire, knives, laundry, being attacked…

16. Any hidden talents?
-I don’t think I have “hidden” talents. I might be able to do things that other people may not realize but not because I’m hiding it. Some may not know that I’m pretty good with hairstyles (not my own obviously) or that I’m the mom who learns all those dances the kids love to do. Nothing so crazy like playing the piano with my toes although I’m pretty good with picking stuff up with them.

17. Have you ever ran a marathon?
-A short 5K is about all I can handle. I have no desire to run more than I need to.

18. What is your favorite type of music?
-I don’t think I have a favorite. My playlist could go from Old School Hip Hop to Classic Rock to an Irish Ballad. I can say you won’t find too much Country or super Heavy Metal though.

19. Is there anything you would change about yourself?
-I wouldn’t change anything because I think that I’m exactly who I’m supposed to be. If you speak of superficial things? I’d like to change my nail color sometime soon.

20. What is your favorite holiday?
-Halloween. I love the scenery, scaring people, spooky stories and dressing up. The creepier the better none of this cutesy costume stuff. Every year, I try to talk my kids into being something gross and ugly but I haven’t succeeded…yet. I’m hoping they’ll come around one day.

Thank you Jessica for all that you do and continue to do for Interrail!
